University of Arizona Global Campus Senior Legal Counsel in San Diego, California
The Senior Legal Counsel for the University of Arizona Global Campus (Global Campus) is a full-time employment position reporting to the Chief Financial Officer. The Senior Legal Counsel will provide advice, guidance and recommendations in partnership with outside legal counsel to the senior leadership team of the Global Campus on legal and compliance matters that impact the University.
Essential Job Duties:
Strategy & Vision
Research, develop and present risk mitigation strategies to Senior Leadership team & Board of Directors of the Global Campus.
Develop strong relationships with the Global Campus’s employees
Leadership & Decision-Making Responsibilities
Oversee Student Dispute Resolution function of the Global Campus
Oversee Whistleblower Complaint investigation process and present outcomes quarterly to the Board of Directors
Provide legal guidance on contracts, investigations and other requests
Conduct legal research and analysis and generate memoranda for members of Senior Leadership team and the university’s outside counsel
Investigate and prepare written responses to external agency data requests, inquiries or other matters.
Take lead or an active role in litigation of or response to employment actions in federal, state and administrative venues on behalf of Company including drafting and responding to discovery requests, taking depositions, defending the company at agency hearings, drafting motions and post hearing briefs
Draft employment contracts, independent contractor agreements, non-compete and separation agreements
Partner with Procurement team on contractual matters
Review, update and draft company employment policies, including employee handbook
Represent company in mediations and negotiate and draft settlement agreements
Investigate or oversee investigations of alleged discrimination, harassment, wage and hour claims and ethics violations
Specialty Knowledge & Subject Area Expertise
- Experience with advising on legal issues facing postsecondary higher education institutions including but not limited to the U.S. Department of Education (DOE), the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)
5+ years of professional legal experience with significant experience in conflict resolution
Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships
Self-motivated, strong work ethic and ability to handle and timely complete multiple tasks
High proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Power Point and Excel
Experience in employment law representing management
Previous experience serving as In-House / Corporate Counsel
Proven ability to define legal issues and legal risks
Business orientated approach to problem-solving, tempered by an appreciation for legal complexity and risks
Have superior academic credentials, including JD (Juris Doctor) from an accredited law school.
Be admitted in good standing to practice law in any state
