University of Arizona Global Campus Associate Vice President, Human Resources in San Diego, California

Position Summary:

The Associate Vice President, Human Resources (AVP, HR) is a full-time employment opportunity. This position will support the institutional leadership team in directing the people strategies for the University. This individual must demonstrate the combination of business acumen, functional knowledge, and ability to influence others to guide the development and adoption of HR strategies that will attract, develop and retain the breadth of talent needed to shape the University of Arizona Global Campus’s future.

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer , the AVP, HR serves as a trusted advisor to the Executive Committee of the Global Campus. As such, this individual will contribute to the Global Campus’s overall strategy and sustainability plans both from a broader university perspective and focus on effectively investing in and leveraging the talent within the institution. The AVP, HR will have full responsibility for Human Resources management including Talent Acquisition and Talent Management strategies, Compensation and Benefits, Payroll and Systems, Organization Development, Training, Leadership Development, and Employee Relations. This individual will specifically focus on supporting the Global Campus’s culture and employee climate and will serve as a resource to each of the University’s department heads.

Essential Job Duties:

Strategy & Vision

  • Contribute to the University’s strategic plan development and establish the Human Resources roadmap to ensure that its human capital needs are anticipated and addressed.

Leadership & Decision-Making Responsibilities

  • Build and develop the Human Resources function within the University.

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the Executive Committee, focusing on the institution’s human capital and how that resource is best leveraged, led, and managed.

  • Advise the Executive Leadership Team on organizational design, change management, and aligning the workforce with university outcomes.

  • Provide a clear understanding of the human resource impact on operational, financial, and talent decisions.

Key Tasks

  • Lead the organization in implementing change, coaching executives, and managers in the most effective communication and implementation of change.

  • Guide the development and implementation of employee-related programs and processes that will support the university requirements, foster a culture of employee and student success, and reinforce the differentiators of the Global Campus that help the institution attract, assess, develop, and retain top talent.

  • Implement integrated performance management systems to ensure focus on university outcomes, development of employee capabilities and career potential, aligned reward systems, and talent retention.

  • Establish a methodology for evaluating university culture and provide recommendations on changes to accomplish institutional goals and objectives.

  • Develop appropriate policies and programs for the effective management of our human capital, including topics such as employee retention, employee relations, workplace diversity, workplace harassment awareness and prevention, employee complaints, and providing internal and external education and career development opportunities.

  • Build the University’s HR capability and lead, manage, coach, and develop the HR team for continued and higher contributions to the Global Campus.

Specialty Knowledge & Subject Area Expertise

  • Maintain knowledge of legal requirements and government reporting regulations affecting the business and ensure policies, procedures, and reporting remain in compliance.

Minimum Requirements:

  • 9+ years Human Resources experience, with at least 5 years of progressive management experience.

  • Advanced knowledge of Human Resources practices and programs, as well as federal and state employment laws.

  • Demonstrated skills in leadership, communication, change management.

  • Experienced in designing and implementing proactive strategies to address key business issues.

  • Knowledgeable about new thinking and innovative approaches to managing human capital.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop, monitor and respond to HR and company metrics.

  • Proven experience effectively managing and developing other professionals.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience leading Human Resources within a non-profit entity

  • Experience in the Higher Education industry

  • Broad business/financial understanding with the ability to apply to human capital implications.

  • MBA or other advanced degree is preferred.


  • Bachelors degree required.
