The COMPENSATION & BENEFITS MANAGER for the University of Arizona Global Campus (UAGC) is a full-time employment position reporting to the SR. DIRECTOR, TOTAL REWARDS . The COMPENSATION & BENEFITS MANAGER will contribute to the strategy, program design, and administration of all health care benefits (medical, prescription drug, dental, vision, etc.) with a focus on delivering an outstanding employee experience. This role will also be responsible for leading and managing compensation processes and projects for the organization. The role will be instrumental in partnering with our third-party vendors and aligning on timing, technique, and year-over-year strategy. This role drives continuous improvement through streamlining of processes, identifying cost savings opportunities and bringing forward innovative program design and strategic solutions. The incumbent will lead/support various compensation-related initiatives such as salary management, compensation programs, employee and manager education and communication, job evaluation, and benchmarking/grading activities within the organization. Additionally, this position does have responsibilities for oversight and direction on compliance, communication, and outcomes-based reporting to ensure awareness, engagement, and overall program efficiency. The incumbent will be an avid collaborator with the broader Human Resources team and will partner with various cross-functional teams throughout the organization. This position will be required to work on-site in our Chandler, AZ office a minimum of 3 days/week.

Essential Job Duties:


  • Works closely with the Sr. Director, Total Rewards to plan and develop the health and well-being benefits strategy and program design recommendations

  • Oversight of vendor relationships, including sophisticated vendor management, with all health and well-being vendors. Ensures exemplary vendor performance through regular status meetings, performance reviews, performance guarantees and audits. Partners with benefits team/vendors to identify trends and cost savings opportunities, as well as opportunities to improve the health outcomes of UAGC employees

  • Leads team on all aspects of the heath care plan administration to ensure compliance with ERISA, HIPAA, and other applicable regulations impacting Group Insurance Plans

  • Collaborates with legal and other outside resources to keep up-to-date on legislative changes effecting the health benefit plans and recommends changes as the need arises

  • Supervises implementation of new benefit plans or benefit changes

  • Oversight of communication development and review for benefit plan changes and on-going education

  • Oversight of FMLA and W/C plans; actively engaged in answering daily benefit questions from employees in verbal and/or written format

  • Champions health and wellness activities throughout the year for University employees

  • Ensure compensation programs remain competitive and enhance UAGC’s ability to attract and retain talent

  • Administer, review, and recommend job titles, pay structures and compensation plans across UAGC

  • Manage the companywide annual merit processes

  • Conduct job evaluations to determine classification as exempt or nonexempt and appropriate salary range

  • Prepare and present summary reports of job analysis and compensation analysis information

  • Proactively lead compensation benchmarking and market research process to ensure market competitiveness across all elements of pay; manage survey provider relationships, participate in compensation surveys, perform survey job matching, and conduct ad-hoc benchmarking and market research.

  • Partner with DEI to calibrate compensation and ensure pay programs are consistent and equitable.

  • Lead the continuous improvement of processes and procedures to drive efficiencies, eliminate manual processes, and improve the employee experience.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in human resources, business administration or closely related field

  • 8 years of progressive experience in Employee Benefits and Compensation with at least 4 years of focus on the design and administration of health care plans and/or compensation design

  • Extensive Workday HRIS/ADP system knowledge and Workday Advanced Compensation

  • Ability to travel 1-2x/quarter, as necessary for institution/business meetings or training/learning opportunities

  • Ability to manage time effectively, train, mentor and coach department leaders, and lead by example

  • Previous experience working with benefit vendors, analyzing plans, and working through complex negotiations. Collaborate with benefits providers on renewals, utilization experience, cost management, and plan design options; review vendors' performance and recommend changes to management.

  • Advanced knowledge of applicable regulatory and legal compliance obligations, rules and regulations, industry standards and practices

  • Ability to effectively present complex topics to individuals and large groups

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to articulate vision with confidence

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and navigate through complex change

  • Deep analytical skills with the ability to translate data and trends into key insights and recommendations

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive information

  • Ability to serve as a go-to for the Total Rewards/HR Team/Leadership Teams as the need arises and for cross-training learning opportunities

  • Knowledge of compensation related federal, state, and local government regulations/advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel/multi-state payroll experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PHR/SPHR/CEBS certification and/or Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS) designations


  • Bachelors degree in human resources or another closely related field required
